ALIEU DARBO LEAVES SCORPIONS CAMP

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, June 07, 2012

Alieu Darbo, who claimed to have recently signed for English Premier League side Wigan Athletics has been dropped from the 23-man squad selected by the Scorpions technicians for the upcoming games against Tanzania and Algeria ‘after his failure to impress’ at training, impeachable sources told Observer Sports.

The former Gambia U-17, U-20 and Le Mans forward was part of a 23-man squad that left Banjul on Wednesday for the game against the Taifa Stars and the Desert Foxes but our source said he was dropped on Tuesday evening.

According to our source, Darbo was informed of the development in the evening after his coaches told him that he failed to impress them. The source further revealed that it coincides with the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ announcement that they can only cater for 22 players.

Alieu Darbo, it was further revealed, was so upset with the decision that he wanted to pack up his belongings and leave camp straight away but was persuaded by a couple of senior players to stay overnight.

This is not the first time that Darbo had altercations with his coaches. The 20-year-old player in the past had several disputes with former Gambia U-20 coach Lamin Sarr whenever he was not unused. Darbo always claimed that he is a ‘big player’ and at one point vowed that he will never play for the country again until his recent change of heart.

Cherno Samba to return home today

Another player who will not be involved in the team’s next two games is FK Tønsberg striker Cherno Samba who will return to his base in Norway having fallen out with the technicians.

The former Millwall, Cádiz, Malaga B, Plymouth Argyle, Wrexham, FC Haka and Panetolikos forward according to sources wasn’t happy with the way he was treated during the team’s training sessions ahead of the game against Morocco last weekend.

It was decided before the Scorpions 1-1 draw with the Atlas Lions on Saturday, that the former England Youth Team International will not be involved anymore. He has even left camp to lodge at the Cocoa Ocean Hotel and Spa.

Sources revealed that Cherno Samba was used as a right-backduring training sessions by the Italian Mancini and after showing his displeasure, he was then used with the local based players, another decision that did not go down well with him.

The Scorpions and their officials Wednesday morning left their camp at the Seaview Garden Hotel en route to Dakar via Nairobi to Dares Salaam where they are expected to arrive on Thursday morning at 07:40am.
