Ambassador Behar optimistic about Gambia-Israel relationship

Africa » Gambia
Friday, November 13, 2009
His Excellency Gideon Behar, the ambassador extra-ordinary plenipotentiary of the Republic of Israel  based in Dakar (Senegal) who is also overseeing The Gambia, Cape Verde, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, has expressed optimism that the bilateral relationship between The Gambia and Israel will yield meaningful gains as the relationship continues.

The two countries, ambassador Behar said, have enjoyed a strong relationship for a long time now. He made this pronouncement yesterday, during an interview with the Daily Observer. He said, ?what Israel would like to see is strengthening relationship with The Gambia?. Already, he added, Israel has identified agriculture and education as their two major areas of intervention in The Gambia. He revealed that in July and August this year, a team of experts came from Israel to give instruction to some officials at the Ministry of Education.

In addition, ambassador Bahr explained that Israel has also been giving trainings on many areas including education, women empowerment and development, in which some Gambians participated. According to him, they are also looking up for a possibility to start up a small scale agricultural project in the Anglican Mission Senior Secondary School in Farafenni, North Bank Region, as well as strengthening the academic ties between Israel and The Gambia.

Israel / Palestine relationsCommenting on the relationship between Israel and Palestine, Ambassador Bahr said the desire of the two countries currently is to have lasting peace. He expressed optimism that peace will finally prevail between the two countries after years of peace talks.
He then commended President Jammeh for all his development strives over the years, and observed that he [President Jammeh] is right to put agriculture as a top agenda in his development plans. If Gambians seriously take heed to this initiative, he said, The Gambia will soon eliminate hunger.
