An honourable awardFriday, April 13, 2012 Editorial The GCRG award pinned on the visiting Taiwanese president,
Ma Ying Jeou by his Gambian counterpart is indeed honourable. The move
manifests the cordial ties between the two countries and will in no small
measure boost the morale of the Taiwanese leadership to contribute more towards
the development of The Gambia. It is of course obvious that true friendship is what The
Gambia has achieved in its relationship withTaiwan.Make no mistake, this is not about the treasured financial aid the
country continues to receive from the people of Taiwan; it is about Taiwan's
commendable sense of respect, and understanding of mutual relationships, among
a whole lot of conventionally respectable societal values. These are values The
Gambia cherishes so dearly and seriously takes into account whenever we get
ourselves committed to any form of relationship. The Taiwanese have been involved in every sector of our
development endeavours -education, agriculture, etc., and they have done so
with the humble intention of always ensuring that the country does not depend
on any otherin the future. This
explains their commendable role in capacitating the human resource base of The
Gambia. They have been there for us both in bad times and in good times. These realities make the ongoing state visit of the
Taiwanese president very significant. The award is a testimony to the Taiwanese leadership that The Gambia
greatly appreciates Taiwan's gestures. The Gambia might not have much to give
to Taiwan, but we can always say ‘thank you’. The visit and the award are therefore indications that relations between Banjul and Taipei are waxing stronger each day.And with continued dedication and genuine commitment to the principles of our bilateral ties, the two countries will certainly accomplish their aspirations both at national and international levels.
