Africa » Gambia
Monday, September 14, 2009
Ann Asru Deen and Development, an lslamic charitable organisation, last Friday, distributed clothes and other valuable items, worth over D50, 000 to orphans and widows in the Kanifing Municipality and Western Region, ahead of the Muslims' feast of Koriteh.

The donated items included: clothes, shoes, among other basic needs. Establsihed in 2004 as a registered charity, the organisation in the past years, has been rendering humanitarian assistance to a good number of people both in The Gambia and in the sub-region, in the form of providing scholarships to the needy students, building of mosques, Islamic schools, helping needy families especially during Tobaski feast, as well as distributing foodstuffs during the holy month of Ramadan.

In an interview with Daily Observer shortly after the presentation, Musa Camara, co-founder of the organisation, emphasised his organisation's resolve  to help the needy, adding that some of the donated clothes were already sewn. He noted that helping the needy people is his organisation's top priority, and finally revealed that they have other programmes in the pipeline.

Omar Hydara, the Social Development Project manager of the organsation, said that the organisation helps needy people especially orphans, widows and communities who are in dire need of assistance. "We help a good number of Muslims both in The Gambia and in the sub-region. We also help people who have their houses destroyed by natural disasters like floods and even sick people who find it difficult to pay for their medical bills," he remarked. According to him, Ramadan is a blessed month and that helping one's fellow human being during the month is another positive move in Islam.
