Another rapist in court

Africa » Gambia
Monday, September 07, 2009
One Sulayman Camara, a Guinean, was on Thursday September 3, 2009  arraigned before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul for rape.

The accused was alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl on May Day, last year, at Sibanor in the Western Region. The case has been suffering a lot of adjournments due to the non-availability of a legal counsel for the accused. Last Thursday, the accused person's plea was taken and Lawyer Edward Gomez informed the court that he had been handed the briefs by the registrar of the High Court to represent the accused.

Senior State Counsel SH Barkum, was then asked by Justice Richards to call the prosecution witnesses. It was, however, ascertained that the witnesses were not in court. The case was subsequently adjourned to the 10th and 11th of September 2009 for the prosecution to open its case.
