Antwerp-Banjul Challenge gives over D1M to seven communities

Officials of the Jammeh Foundation for Peace (JFP), last Friday disbursed  cheques of over D1M to seven communities in the country. The vice president and minister of women's affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy presided over the handing ceremony at State House, Banjul.

The amount was proceeds of the annual Antwerp-Banjul Challenge. The beneficiary communities, includes Tujereng Arabic-English school, with a sum of D108, 000, Second Home, D99, 000, SOS D87, 300, Women's Advancement-D110, 700, Heart House, a home for children with learning difficultiies-D72, 000, Mekadiff in Gunjur-D120, 600, Sare Gumalo Water Project-D416, 700 and Kombo Costal Humanitarian Mission-D328, 000.

Receiving the Cheque on behalf of the beneficiaries, the vice president and minister of Women's Affairs Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, commended Antwerp Banjul Challenge for the gesture and described them as long time partners of government who believe in qualitative donation. She urged beneficiary communities to give regular reports since it will please donors. "People who give monies are individual but they want to know how there are spent. The foundation has to report back to our donors back to get other funds," she urged.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Ardy Sarge, chairman of the fundraising committee of JFP, disclosed that during the auction they raised about 1,492,000 (one million four hundred and ninety two thousand dalasis), from vehicle sales, 90 per cent of which goes to the beneficiaries. "The 10% is for expense which we normally use  as crossing fee and ferry services. So we are here today to give that cheque to the beneficiary communities donated by Antwerp-Banjul Challenge," He revealed. She commended the challengers for the donation and.

president Jammeh and the First Lady for their vision to set up the JFP.Bai Matarr Drammeh, a board member of JFP, described the day as wonderful since 'giving out is very important as well as receiving'. Nancy Njie, chief executive officer of JFP, said the gesture is not a surprise to the foundation, as they have witnessed over the years, the unflinching support of Antwerp-Banjul Challenge. "That area is very important and we need your support. I want to thank the challengers for their support over the years. I have no doubt in my mind that this contribution will move from strength to strength," she said.

She appealed to beneficiary communities to send their report on quarterly basics to them for onward delivery to the challengers. CEO Njie expressed gratitude to the vice president, the board of directors, for what she described as their unflinching support to the foundation, and assured that the relationship between Antwerp Banjul Challenge and JFP will grow from strength to strength. Oumie Tall, head of  SOS Children's Village, who delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the beneficiary groups, assured that the monies will be put to good use.
