Armed Forces win league title

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 22, 2009
The Gambia Armed Forces Football Club needed just four points in four matches to clinch the Gambia Football Association First Division League title, but a 1-0 win over Tallinding United yesterday at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium gave them the crown after their closest rivals, Samger, were dumped by Brikama United in the day's other match at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai.

Brikama United scored two second half goals, both emanating from a spot kick, to effectively dash second-place Samger's hopes of the title. As the table currently stands, Armed Forces have earned 40 points with three games in hand, while Samger have earned 31 points, with six points being the maximum they can earn. The crown is Armed Forces' first league title in six years and second since their promotion to the premier tier of Gambia football league. Soldiers' Pa Modou Gaye, alias Ninja, scored the only goal of the match in the 10th minute to seal the much needed victory, which effectively condemned Tallinding United back to the second division.

The Tallinding side have one match remaining (against Real de Banjul on Saturday), but even a win against the 2007 champions will see them settle for only 20 points in 22 matches - 6 points short of the required to avoid the drop.
