ASFA on illegal migration campaign

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
In their continuous campaign against illegal migration among youths in society, the African Solidarity for Action (ASFA) last Saturday, held a one-day campaign at the open ground at St Therese's Upper Basic School, Kairaba Avenue.

ASFA, a non-profit organisation fighting against illegal migration started this campaign about 3 weeks ago according to Adama Mbye, coordinating officer of ASFA. According to him, among the places they have had their campaigns were in Barra, Kerewan and Farafeni. He added that after KMC, the campaign train will proceed to Western Region and onward.

Bringing the message of illegal migration to the grassroot level and for people to understand the hazards in traveling through back-way, ASFA also staged a drama entitled 'Risk in back-way travelling.'  The drama, which focused on how a young boy called Lamin has risked his life to meet his untimely death at the ocean, discourages the youths in investing their money on this unsuccessful and perilous journey.

Ellen Mendy and Abdullahi Jattah both students of St Theresis's Upper Basic School, said as illegal migration is taking the centre stage in society, this campaign is vital for the school going children. Buba Jattah, in his own opinion said the money they are wasting on this journey can be used to set up a small scale business that can in future become a big venture if it is well managed.

Peter Gomez, assistant coordinating officer of ASFA, said parents should endeavour to discourage their children from embarking on this illegal journey and advised them to wait until they can facilitate their travelling legally. He noted that traffickers are looking for how they will increase the volume of their pockets not the safety of their victims.
