ASSET Climate Care committee set for tree planting

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, July 01, 2009
In a bid to combat desertification and global warming in The Gambia, the Association of Small Scale Enterprise in Tourism (ASSET) Climate Care Committee is looking forward to plant more seedlings in the coming rainy season.

The committee was established in 2008, as part of ASSET's involvement in environmental activities. In the last rainy season, the committee made tremendous achievements by planting over 10,000 seedlings in various locations in the country; namely, Abuko Nature Reserve, Sandeli Holiday Resort, Pirang and Siffoe Senior Secondary School.

The committee comprises of people from different organisations who are compassionate with  the environment in one way or the other. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer recently, the chairman of the committee, Modou Lamin Kinteh, said: "We are working hard to plant more trees in the coming season and probably to establish a wood-logs farm in one of the villages in North Bank Region.

Our aims are to restore Gambia's indigenous trees and make it greener than before." ASSET as an organisation is engaged in promoting tourism in The Gambia and beyond. It has earned international recognition in the tourism sector since its establishment.
