Editorial

The long summer vacation is finally over as schools opens. Students should now prepare their minds for a new academic session. We need not emphasise the critical role of parents and teachers here as we are convinced that they already know what is expected of them and the significance attached to education by the state.

As schools reopen for another academic year, we urge students to make their books their best friends, and reading their best hobby. They should understand that they are the future technocrats and administrators of the country and cannot accomplish this task without education.

The current leadership has already engendered the necessary environment that makes the sky the limit for education. For President Jammeh, a responsive, relevant and quality education for all Gambians is a cornerstone for the development trend the country is yearning for.

And this he immediately set himself to achieving. The idea of ‘Education for All' has already been pronounced, but first, the accessibility of schools was the focus. Many new schools have already cropped up, right across the country.Inhabitants of the most remote areas of the country now have schools at their backyards.

Within a very short period of time, there seem to be more schools than children of school going age in the country. Our pupils and students should take maximum ownership of this great opportunity and work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the leadership.

They should be aware that the human society has advanced to the stage where science and technology dominates. The modern man is surviving not only by natural will but also because of the capability of science to control and manage human life.

The sustainability of our development therefore largely depends on our mastery of science and technology. Hence the necessity of education which must be transformed into knowledge and knowledge transformed into culture.

As schools reopen, we hope that our pupils and students together with parents and teachers would amalgamate efforts to ensure that our school system produces quality and relevant education. Finally, we wish our students a happy new school year.
