Bakau cemetery cleaned-up

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, June 16, 2009
The community of Bakau over the weekend, embarked on a massive cleansing exercise at the Bakau cemetery.

The exercise which brought together youths, young and old, was meant to clean up the cemetery for safety and to honour those buried there. Ousman Rambo Jatta, councillor of Bakau, said the cleaning was started by some soldiers and Senegalese, who almost did 80% of the cleaning and he then came up with an idea that the 20% should be done by the community members.

"This is a place where our mothers, fathers, grandparents and children are resting. It should always be clean for safety for those who normally come to pray for their love ones or when a burial is taking place" he said. Jatta added that the cleansing exercise is a non-political exercise and they are planning for the cleansing exercise to be a continuous exercise in the community.

Lamin Jammeh, a youth from Bakau, expressed delight at the exercise. He called on his colleagues to always come and join in the exercise as the cemetery is a place where every human being will last. Lamin Ceesay and Aja Koita Suso, all residents of Bakau, expressed similar sentiments.
