Bakau condemns dumping at graveyard![]() Thursday, September 24, 2009 The head Imam, Alkalo and elders of Bakau, have expressed with deep sense of concern and regret over the illegal and heartless dumping of waste at the town's cemetry. "It is rather unfortunate that some people got the audacity and courage to drag waste items from their compounds and dump them right on the fence of the village cemetry.There are specific places for dumping through the length and breadth of Bakau and its environs, but some choose the graveyard fence as the way out for dumping," said the Alkalo. These comments were made on Sunday, September 20th,shortly before the start of the Ed ul-Fitr prayers at the main Bakau praying ground led by Imam Omar Jammeh. The Imam elaborated extensively on the importance of cemetry, life and the mass of important personalities buried there in. He noted that graveyard is the second and permanent rest place for all those who once tasted life on this planet. There is a strong need to keep our cemetries clean and be respected at all times. Graves are the most important and clear manifestations of the greatness of Allah. You are made from the land and it's the land that you are to return. So nobody should disrespect our graveyards but rather contribute towards their maintenance," he explained to the audience at the praying ground. Luntang Jaiteh, Alkalo of Bakau, took the opportunity to warn people to stop what he described as rampant and unlawful killing of one and another. He said The Gambia is currently faced with numerous killings and other illegal activities which ought to be stopped immediately. The Bakau Alkalo conveyed message of the Gambian leader that the recent spate of killings in the country has to be stopped and the uncompromising steps taken towards that effect. "If you kill, you will be killed without compromise," he hinted the audience.
