Biko cement second place

Africa » Gambia
Saturday, May 30, 2009
Steve Biko cemented a second spot in the Gambia Football Association first division table despite drawing their rearranged game with newly crowned champions Armed Forces on Thursday.

With the title decided, all eyes were now turned to the battle for the second place between Wallidan, Samger and the Bakau giants, Steve Biko, whose superior point difference ahead of yesterday's matches earned them the favourite tag.

Biko were held at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium, but despite Wallidan's effort to beat Samger 1-0 in their clash at the Independence Stadium, the capital club narrowly missed out on the race for the second-place - thanks to their inferior goal difference to Biko. After playing all their 22 matches, both Steve Biko and Wallidan are levelled on points and goal differences (32 points and +4 a piece), but the Bakau side scored 21 goals, just one goal more than their bitter enemies' 20 goals.

Meanwhile, Bakau United, who rounded up their season with a 2-1 victory over Brikama United last weekend, sealed the fourth place, while Gamtel and last season's runners up Samger temporary occupy the fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Sang Ndong's Hawks, who spent the better part of the season at the bottom of the table, can finish on high note if they garner the maximum points in their rearranged match against Armed Forces on Thursday, June 4.

Hawks currently sit at eighth position with 28 points and a Armed Forces win next week, though a dismal probability, will see them leapfrog Gamtel to the fifth position.
