Biri-Biri endorses Hala Samba’s candidature

Africa » Gambia
Friday, September 21, 2012

Gambian Football legend Alhaji Momodou Njie, popularly known as Biri-Biri, has thrown his weight behind the man who is so far the first to make public his intention to stand for The Gambia Football Association presidency slated for the 30th of September.

The country’s most successful footballer, as Biri is widely regarded -with the peak of his career coming during a successful stint with Spanish Premera Division outfit, Sevilla, declared that he has endorsed the candidature of his former Banjul Wallidan coach in the name of Adama Hala Samba to steer the affairs of the GFA for the next four years when a congress is held to elect the president at the end of this month.

Speaking in an interview with Observer SportsWednesday, Biri said the reason why he decided to endorse Hala Samba’s candidature is that the man has a great passion for the game and has registered great success both as a coach, administrator for Wallidan and also as a national team player. He stated that the achievements and development Samba has registered cannot be compared with anyone. “I have no doubts if Gambians give him the opportunity he will make a difference in the development of our football,” he added.

He stressed that his endorsement of Halais not personal but purely based on football and the success stories he has achieved in Gambian Football. Biri pointed out that Hala was the first coach to take Wallidan to a quarter-final in the African Cup Winners Cup and also the first to win a trophy for Wallidan both in Banjul and Dakar.
