Boosting the agricultural sectorThursday, May 07, 2009 Editorial, Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the people of this country. Even though most of our farmers live on subsistence agriculture, the sector remains the main contributor to our gross domestic product. This simply implies that the vast majority of the people earn their income from the agricultural sector. The move by government to strengthen agricultural organisations in the country is indeed a commendable one. We are optimistic that the newly drafted agricultural policy by the responsible department of state will improve the output of our agricultural sector. The president has always maintained that the only way we can achieve sustainable development is to produce enough food for ourselves. Realising that the back-to-the-land scheme cannot be successful without the necessary equipment, the president makes available tractors, fertilizers and other farming materials crucial in the maximisation of production. Strengthening the capacity of agricultural organisations with the necessary equipment, skills and techniques will therefore boost the overall efforts to develop the sector. This is because it will give farmers the courage and confidence to maximise their efforts in the process of production. The output of farming can be profitable as concerned organisations are in place to ensure this. However, what is important for the people, particularly the youths, is to massively respond to the president's back-to-the-land call. He has endeavoured to make available the tools necessary for making agriculture a profitable enterprise. Our response to the back-to-the-land call will not only help in eradicating hunger but also provide abundant food in the household. Agriculture is the foundation for all other developments. We should therefore take a pivotal role in ensuring the sector's advancement. It is through this that we can engender a food self-sufficient nation. Author: DO | Media Actions |
