Boosting the Judiciary

Editorial

An effective and efficient Judiciary is an indispensable prerequisite for a free, orderly and democratic society.  As an institution through which the state administers justice, it is crucial in the maintenance of peace and progress in our country. The more the Judiciary stands in the defence of justice, the better the people will conduct themselves and direct their actions towards society's advancement, because they will have faith on the system.

We all know that the government of the day is committed to the principles of equal rights, justice, accountability and transparency. It is therefore no surprise that President Jammeh once again manifested his commitment to ensure effective and speedy dispensation of justice in the country with the recent donation of 11 brand new vehicles to the Judiciary and the Attorney General's Chambers.

The donated vehicles would go a long way in ensuring that unnecessary delays in trials and hindrance to court proceeding which are often due to mobility constraints become a thing of the past. In fact, the donation of the vehicles came at a much better time, a time that acts of criminality are increasing in the country. The judiciary has a great role to play in correcting such acts by beating culprits with the stick of justice.

The president has categorically stated that his government  does not interfere with the judicial process or try to influence the outcome of any trial, but only assists the Judiciary to enable it to effectively and efficiently administer justice. Such a comment is indeed vital, and shows that the law courts in this country stand independent, free and impartial in dispensing justice.

To whom much is given, much is expected. Having received so much support from the government, the onus  is on the Judiciary to deliver effectively.  We are optimistic that with this government, the institution would receive all the  necessary support, and so must continue to jealously safeguard justice for the interest of the nation as a whole.  This is the ambition of the president and we must all work towards its realisation.
