Brikama Nursery School foundation stone laid

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, September 09, 2009
The chairman of the Brikama Area Council (BAC), Sunkary Badjie, last Saturday, laid the foundation stone of the Brikama Nursery School near Kunta Kinteh Senior Secondary School in Brikama, in the Kombo Central District of Western Region.

In his speech, Badjie disclosed that the building of schools is the responsibility of the area councils and expressed gratitude to the Bedford Community College in the UK for their support in sponsoring the project. He remarked that the council was very much grateful to the college for complementing government's effort in building schools in the region.

Badjie urged the community to send their children to school,  in order to get rid of ignorance and illiteracy in the community. He however stressed that national development is not a one man show but a collective responsibility. Ms Joy Buckana, a representative of Bedford Community College in her statement, narrated that she first came to The Gambia in 2006 and felt so much at home and had a keen interest in the country.

Ms Buckanan further revealed that   she had sent several correspondence to the project manager of Brikama Nursery School, Ousman G.A. Kebbeh who also sent her a detailed information about the school, its vision and its needs, adding that she eventually met  Kebbeh and money was sent to buy land.
"Education takes place during the formative years when we form our characters, build our principles and start to plan our lives and our contribution to society," the Bedford  college rep remarked.

She expressed delight to witness the laying of the foundation stone for the nursery school and wished the nursery school every success. She noted that the motto is: "Gladly learn and gladly teach". Ms Buckanan revealed that knowledge enriches our lives, helps us to understand and interpret our environment as it can keep us safe and healthy. She however transmitted the statement from Bedford Community College to everyone present and urged everyone to gladly learn and gladly teach.

The chairman of the Parent- Teacher Association, Karamo Nyambally, thanked Bedford Community College for the development efforts made in making the laying of the foundation stone for the three classroom block, a store and an office a success and the contractor, Sabally, promised to complete the construction in two months.
