Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Bethel Tiny Tots Nursery School (BTTNS) on Friday 8 January, 2010 held an interactive session with the media as part of their 2010 children’s development package.

The session was held at the school campus in Latrikunda German. Speaking at the interactive session, Jamesette N. Taylor, the principal of the school said it was established in 2005 and is running a day care and a pre-school centre, which is offering exceptional and quality services at affordable fees to the public. She stated that the BTTNS is known for imparting knowledge and excellence on children. “We see the role of kindergarten education as preparing children for the enjoyable and exciting journey of the life-long learning,” she enthused.

According to her, early childhood is the best to ignite a child’s love for learning, as a child who sees learning as pleasurable and challenging has a head-start on the journey of life- long learning and looks forward to spectrum of opportunities they can explore and discover. Taylor revealed the aims of her school in bringing out the full potentials of the children through a holistic approach as they believe in the development of the whole child.

“We strive to provide a conducive environment by taking into consideration each and every child’s unique strengths and differences. Our kindergarten’s curriculum is based mainly on the Integrated Thematic Approach supported by fun, objective-driven hands on learning centres,” She said, adding that “excursions /outdoors field trips are incorporated into our themes to encourage children to learn from the world outside their classroom”. For his part, Joseph Akaga, the public relations consultant to the school spoke at length on the computer and language trainings for the Nursery, adding that it would help the kindergarten to have a well- rounded love of language, from listening and speaking to reading and writing. “They are using a phonics-based English and French programmes which cover basic language and literacy skills that lead eventually to reading and writing,” Akaga revealed.

According to him, it combines stories using big books, songs, rhymes, language activities, reading, spelling and creative writing. He then revealed that children are given a foundation in early maths skills such as counting, grouping, shapes, graphing and patterning through everyday experiences that are relevant to their lives. “We strive to give the children a good head start in their learning journey”, he added.

He disclosed that the computer aided education teaches the children to master computer skills by educating them with the proper and logical applications of computer technology. He added that the children build up their confidence, independence, enthusiasm and creative thinking strategies that are needed for meeting new challenges in a fun-filled learning environment. “Our teaching system is a revolutionary method of observing and supporting the natural development of children and it helps children to develop creativity, problem solving, critical thinking and time management skills, to contribute to society and the environment, and to become fulfilled persons in the future,” he remarked.

Furthermore, the elements of the music and movement are integrated into the teaching of English, French and Mathematics. “There is a separate time set aside for the exploration of music and movement in a creative and imaginative manner with a music specialist once a week,” he remarked. He added that during this music class, they will sing, play with instruments and have structured or spontaneous activities in a nature that permit a higher of expression and individuality. He said that there is also a separate time set aside for an art specialist to conduct art calligraphy lessons. Other speakers at the press briefing included two parents namely: Sirah Ellis and Tony Smart who spoke length about the school.
