The Bundung Home Link Red Cross Society during the weekend held
its annual Iftar and Islamic conference at a ceremony held at Bundung. Speaking at the occasion, Modou Sallah, the chairperson of
The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) expressed delight and thanked Allah the
Almighty for the health and ability vested in them to witness yet another
important day for the Link and the Society at large.
He noted that The Gambia Red Cross Society is known for its
humanitarian gesture, being rendered without discrimination or favour. The
Iftar, he said, is part of the gesture which is annually done by the Link in
the Kombos with the purpose of reminding the youth and members of the Society
about their religion.
Outass Muhammed Lamin Khan spoke on the importance of Islam
and marriage, saying that Islam is a clean and pure religion that delivers
human beings from indecent behaviours if it is followed accordingly. He noted
that marriage is something everlasting that one needs to experience in other to
reduce fornication; that it is something that needs to be looked into before going
He said, “As Islam says men and women should get married
when they reach the stage but should choose decent partners from a good and
decent family”. Oustass Khan added that a young lady should be morally trained,
and be steadfast, to be able to make a good wife with blessed and beneficial
children in the future.
For his part, Sarjo Singateh, an Islamic preacher, noted
that if Islam is properly followed most marriages will last, but that people of
this generation get married for the sake of marriage, which he said leads to
many divorces, as against the teachings of the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
He observed that when Ramadan approaches, people, especially
girls get married but as soon as the Ramadan ends, many marriages end.
According to him, the woman as the eye of the family is
responsible for the well being of her family, but that they also need to be
loved, cared, respected and honoured by their husbands. He further stated that
a man as head of the family should have a good relationship with his wife and
children, in order to give the wife room to be caring and responsive.
Singateh urged the youth to be steadfast and faithful, as
this is the time that God needs them most, whilst advising girls to choose good
husbands and avoid marrying for money, rather they should get married for Islam, as it is the first and
the last religion.
