Businesswoman testifies in fake dollar caseWednesday, March 10, 2010 Salieu Jang Jallow, a businesswoman residing in Brikama Nema, serving as PW1 in the ongoing fake dollar case filed in against one Kawsu Jabbi, last Thursday, 4th of March 2010 testified before Magistrate Emmanuel Ikea at the Brikama Magistrates Court. The woman explained among other things that on the 15th of February 2010, while at the market doing her business, the accused approached her and told her that he was having some US dollars for change. "The accused asked me to help him change the said money into Gambian dalasi and brought 3000 dollars. After changing the dollar, the accused left. I showed the said dollars to my husband, who confirmed as a fake notes. Few days later, the accused returned and made a similar request to which I responded in the positive. He asked as to whether I have used the previous changed dollars, but I told him I kept it", the woman explained to the court. She further informed the court that whilst with the accused, her husband arrived and asked the accused whether he had some dollars again for change and he responded that he was having 4,700 dollars. According to her, no sooner had her husband persuaded the accused for them (the complainant and the husband) to go to their home than the police arrived. The accused attempted to escape but he was apprehended with the aid of people around and taken to the police station. Responding to a cross-examination by Buba Jawo, counsel for the accused, PW1 said that her husband did not go anywhere in order to determine the authenticity of the said fake dollar and explained that this was her first time changing a foreign currency.
