Carayol hits brace in Torquay Utd win![]() Monday, July 13, 2009 Gambian international teenager, Mustapha Carayol, scored a brace as his English lower league side, Torquay United, got off their pre season campaign to a winning start at Buckland Athletic on Saturday. Two goals each from the Gambian and trialist Ben Joyce got saw the National Conference (fifth tier) side register an emphatic 4-0 win over Buckland. The game was primarily arranged as a charity fund raiser for Leukaemia Research after Torquay defender Chris Todd was diagnosed with the illness last season. Both teams donned colourful one-off kits for the game but it was the orange of Torquay that outshone the pink of Peninsula League side Buckland. It was no surprise that the game's opening goal came from Carayol after 24 minutes. The right winger was United's main attacking threat in the first half and fired into an empty net after beating the offside trap and leaving Buckland goalkeeper Neil Montandon stranded. Moments earlier the home keeper did excellently to deny Elliot Benyon. Trialist Ben Joyce, recently released from Swindon, played a neat through ball for his strike partner who only had Montandon to beat but the No 1 came out on top. Carayol continued to terrorise the Bucks defence and moments after cracking the post with a 20-yarder he drove home United's second from a similar distance just before the break. The hosts didn't see much of Scott Bevan's goal. The closest they got was after 15 minutes when Roger Bonaparte's speculative over-head attempt flew just wide. Gulls boss Paul Buckle kept his promise of fielding all available first teamers and made eight changes at half-time. Joyce was one of the three to remain on the pitch and he made the most of his opportunity with two cool finishes in 12 minutes to make it 4-0. To their credit Buckland heads didn't drop and Darren Vicary was only inches away from a consolation late on following a great cross from substitute Shane Gill. Next for Carayol and Torquay is a trip to Southern League Premier side Tiverton Town on Saturday, July 25. Before that, United have home games against Plymouth Argyle next Wednesday, Bristol Rovers on July 18 and Derby County on July 23. Author: Nanama Keita | Media Actions |
