Cattle theft convict files appeal notice

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, January 06, 2010
One Essa Dicko has filed a notice of appeal before the High Court in Banjul, presided over by Justice Joseph Wowo.

The convict is challenging the decision of the Mansakonko Magistrates Court, presided over by Magistrate Sheriff Tabally on April 7, 2009 on four counts of cattle stealing. The appellant was convicted and sentenced by the said Lower Court to pay the sum of D700,000 in default to serve four years imprisonment with hard labour for the offence of cattle stealing.

The appellant in his notice of appeal disclosed that he is not guilty of the offence and he is therefore appealing against his conviction and soliciting for a reduction of the sentence imposed on him by the said Lower Court. Meanwhile, Justice Joseph Wowo ordered that the registrar at the Mansakonko Magistrates Court furnish the High Court with the records of proceedings from the Lower Court.
