Celebrating July 22nd: A moral obligationTuesday, July 21, 2009 Editorial, Tomorrow is the 22nd day of July. Some fifteen years ago, this day went down in the annals of our history, marking the beginning of a new start in our struggle for self determination, progress, peace and prosperity. It was this day in our history that gave birth to a new Gambia, a Gambia on the path of development. Tomorrow is the fifteenth anniversary of our great July 22nd revolution. Thousands of sober minded Gambians will converge at the July 22nd Square not only to celebrate this landmark victory but also to assess how far The Gambia has gone in our struggle against outside domination, poverty and under-development. The July 22nd celebration is more than mere fanfare and jubilation. It is a moment of reflecting on the revolution's achievements and constraints and as well as strengthen our strategies for the production of growth and development. Participating in the July 22nd revolutionary celebrations is therefore a manifestation of the highest sense of patriotism and love for oneself. We should always remember that it is this revolution that provided us with high class road networks, good electricity and water supplies, modern hospitals, wider scope of education, and a host of other developments that we cannot mention. As Gambians, if we take active part in the celebrations, we are simply acknowledging our appreciation of the tremendous developments that President Jammeh has brought to our doorsteps. This will, as a matter of fact, boost the morale of the President to galvanize his development ambitions and collectively we can transform our great country into the Silicon Valley of Africa. We are therefore seizing this opportunity to call on all Gambians to turn out in our thousands and converge at the July 22nd Square to commemorate our symbolic national day. Let us continue demonstrating to the world that what happened in The Gambia on the 22nd day of July 1994 was born out of the experience and demand of the people. Besides, ever since the birth of a new Gambia, the revolutionary leadership has advanced greatly and is fulfilling the needs and aspirations of the people. The revolution is not relenting in its efforts to promote a progressive nation. More importantly, the revolution's attempt to create avenues that permit the empowerment of the citizenry is blatantly visible. We therefore seize this opportunity to wish the entire country a happy July 22nd celebration. Celebrating July 22nd: A moral obligation Tomorrow is the 22nd day of July.
