Churchills Town, Jimpex junction flood

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 19, 2010
The torrential rain that occured yesterday has left the streets of Serrekunda and its suburbs like  Churchills Town and Jimpex Road's main junction along the Westfield-Banjul Highway flooded, making it almost impassable for commuters and vehicles.

The heavy rain which started on Wednesday morning lasted for at least 5 hours. These reporters visited some of the affected areas during the rain and spoke to some commuters and taxi drivers about the flood. Mamudou Manga, a taxi driver, said when such kind of rain occurs they (taxi drivers) usually encounter problems in their business. He added that such heavy rains can easily damage vehicles especially vehicles that use diesel.

Abdourahman Jallow, a trader along the Serrekunda Mosque Road in Churchills Town, explained that sometimes water enters in his shop when there is flooding. Christina Coker, a student of St. Thereses Upper Basic School, who fell into the gutters while she was on her way home and Fatoumata Camara, a resident of Churchills Town, all complained of the flooding.
