Countdown to Ramadan (Part II)

C. As Ramadan is the month of the revelation of the Qur'an; the Muslim should recite a great deal of it. For Gabriel, the Angel who conveyed the Qur'an to the Prophet (PBUH) used to teach the latter the Qur'an in Ramadan. Irthman Ibn Awan (May Allah be pleased with him) used to finish the whole Qur'an within three, seven or ten nights, and they recited it during prayer or otherwise.

D. Abdullah Ibn Masoud reported, Allah's Apostle (PBUH) said to him, 'Read For Me'. So I said, 'I read for you and it was revealed to you'. The Prophet (PBUH) replied, 'I would like to hear it recited by someone else'. So Ibn Masoud recited the Sura of Al-Nisaa (Women) till he reached the verse: "How then if we brought from each people a witness, and we brought these as a witness against these people", then the Apostle said, "That's enough". And his eyes were filled with tears. Abu Huraira reported that when this verse was revealed, 'Do you then wonder at this recital, and will ye laugh and not weep' (Al Najm, The Star 59-60)

5. Staying at the Mosque till Sunrise: After Al-Fajr (Dawn) prayer, the Apostle (PBUH) used to stay at the mosque till sunrise ' (Transmitted by Muslim). Anas reported that the Prophet (PBUH) stated, 'Whoever offers Al-Fajr (Dawn) prayer in congregation, sits praising Allah till sunrise, and then prays two Rakaat, will get a reward which is quite equivalent to that of Hajj and Umra'. ' 'Transmitted by Al-Tirmith'.This is the case everyday, on days other then Ramadan. How about the days of Ramadan?

6. I'tikaf: The Prophet (PBUH) used to practice I'tikaf in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. And in the year in which he passed away, he practiced I' tikaf in the last twenty days (Of Ramadan) ' (Transmitted by Al-Bukhari). One might think that it is different to practice, but the fact is that it is easy for a person who has a strong and high will.A large number of Muslims practice I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan, looking for the night of Qadr (Power).

7.Umra in Ramadan The Prophet (PBUH) stated, 'Performing Umra in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj (In Reward), or to Hajj with one, (In another report). Transmitted by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

8. Looking for the night of Qadr (Power) Allah, Almighty, said: We have indeed revealed this message (Qur'an) in the night of power, The night of power is better than thousand months. The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'Whoever observes Qiyam (The Supererogatory night prayer) in the night of power, which is Ramadan, then all his previous sins are forgiven'. Transmitted by Al-Bukhari and Muslim. Aisha narrated: Allah's Apostle (PBUH) said, 'Search for the night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.

9. Increasing one's praise of Allah, prayers and asking Allah's Forgiveness
The days and nights of Ramadan are the blessed days; therefore, you should avail yourself of Allah's blessing by intensifying your prayers especially at the times; Of their acceptance (By Allah)

Some of these invaluable times are;
A. During Ramadan, invaluable of those who are fasting are accepted by Allah. Almighty Allah comes down saying: 'Is there anyone needy, to be given what he needs? Is there anyone who asks for forgiveness so that I may forgive him?
B.    Asking Allah for forgiveness at the time before dawn.
C.    At a certain time on Friday which could be the last hour of that day.

Lastly, I would like to draw your attention, Allah says: 'I am but a man like yourselves, (but) the inspiration has come to me, that your God is one God; Whoever expects to meet His Lord, let him work in righteousness, and in the worship of His Lord, let him work in righteousness, and in the worship of His Lord, admit no one as partner'. Al Kahf (The Cave) 110; Allah's Apostle (PBUH) also said, 'What I fear most for you is minor polytheism'. They said: 'What is it?' He said: 'It is hypocrisy'.

Fun in Ramadan
There is a dangerous tendency noticed especially in Ramadan, i.e. wasting one's time lavishly instead of spending it in Allah's worship, remembrance and obedience. In fact, this is the renunciation of Allah's worship and obedience. It is the renunciation of Allah's mercy and divine awards. Thus Allah said, 'But whosoever turns away from my message, verify for him is a life narrowed down, and we shall raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment'.

He will say: 'O my Lord, why has thou raised me up blind, while I hail sight (before)? Allah will say: 'Thus did thou, when our sight came unto thee, you disregarded. And the penalty of the hereafter is far more grievous and more enduring'. (Taha 124-127).

People in Ramadan
Fasting of Ramadan is an obligatory duty for every grown-up and sane Muslim. Fasting is not obligation on the Kaafir (The non-believer) and is not accepted from him until he becomes a Muslim. Fasting is also not due from the young until they reach puberty. The young may be asked to fast if they can manage it without causing harm to themselves, so that they may grow up accustomed to it.

The insane or unconscious person does not have to fast. For this reason very old people who are not mentally alert and cannot distinguish between things are not expected to fast and need not offer food for not having fasted.Regarding the fasting of a sick or a traveling person, Allah says: 'If any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (shall be made up) from days later on.

There are two types of sick persons
The first type is that sick person whose illness is a lasting one and who is not affected to recover. Such a sick person does not have to fast because he cannot at any time endure fasting. He should however offer food to the poor for everyday of fasting he misses.

Category one
He does not find fasting hard and harmful, in this case he should fast because he has no excuse.

Category two
He finds fasting hard but not harmful, in this case fasting is not recommended for him; because it is better that he makes use of Allah's permission or concession (Rukhsah) since fasting would be hard for him.

Category three
Fasting would be harmful to him, in this case it is prohibited (Haraam) because Allah has said: 'Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves'; for Allah hath been to you most merciful and said: 'And make not your own hands contribute to your destructio'. In a Hadith the Prophet Muhammed says: 'No harm (to yourselves) nor harming (others)'. Reported by Ibn Majah and Haakim. An-Nawawi said that there are other similar reports, which strengthen each other.

Group one
The traveler who suffers extreme hardship, in such a case, fasting is Haraam (Forbidden) because Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was fasting during the victory campaign (Fatihi Makkah) 'The opening of Makkah'. When he learnt that some people with him were doing exactly as he was doing, he drank a cup of water after the Asr Salah as people were looking at him. He was then told that some people were still fasting, he then said: 'Those are the disobedient ones'. Narrated by Muslim.

Group two
This type of traveler finds fasting hard but not excessively so. It is preferable that such a traveler should not fast because he would, by fasting, be rejecting Allah's concession and would also bee bringing hardship and suffering to himself.

Group three
Here the traveler does not find fasting hard, such a traveler should do whichever is easier for him (i.e. he chooses between fasting and not fasting) because Allah intends every fasting and not fasting, because Allah intends in this context means 'likes'. If fasting and not fasting are equivalent for such a traveler then fasting is preferable because this was what Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did.

1.Sexual intercourse: When a fasting person has intercourse, his fast is invalidated.
2.Ejaculation of sperm by touching or kissing or hugging. Kissing without ejaculation does not break the fast.
3.The intake of any kind of food or drink, which reaches the body.
4.Everything, which is considered eating or drinking. For example, any injection that has nourishment and works like food. Otherwise such injections are allowed during fasting.
5.Taking out blood by scarification or by opening a vein, when this causes weakness of the body.
6.Vomiting intentionally.
7.Appearance of menstruation (monthly periods) or blood after delivery for women.

First condition
The fasting person should be aware of the rule and the time.

Second condition
If a fasting person eats food forgetting that he is fasting, his fast will not be broken.

Third condition
The fasting person acts against his own free will. If he is forced to eat or drink, his fats will not be broken. Such things are concessions, which Allah allowed us as His mercy to the fasting men.
