Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, July 17, 2012

The Regional Education Directorate, Region 5, in collaboration with teachers and cluster monitors of Charge-1 Cluster Thursday held their annual teachers’ gathering at Santanto Bubu Lower Basic School, in Upper Fulladu west.

The occasion was geared towards improving teachers’ professional development and growth. This year’s gathering brought together over 53 teachers, 2 senior education officers, 3 cluster monitors, 2 VSOs and the principal education officer.

In his opening remarks, Ansu Sanyang, the cluster monitor of Charge-l Cluster, harped on the need for teachers and professional bodies to continue holding such professional gatherings, in a bid to upgrade teachers’ knowledge and improve pedagogical skills. Deliberations were made on such topics as learner-centered methodology; ethics and professionalism, among others.

In his key note address, Alpha Camara, the principal education officer, stressedthe importance of data collection, data analysis and data management at school level. He also expressed the need for reliable data collection in school development, planning and implementation; while pointing out the complexities, dynamics and risks involved in providing unreliable school data.

In his power point presentation, Camara made comparison of enrolment data from 2002 to 2012, National Assessment Test results from 2009-2011 and qualified teacher supply in the region, highlighting the trends and patterns. Camara challenged all present; from classroom teachers, school heads, cluster monitors, education officers to involve in reliable data collection for sustainable school management.

Momodou L Jobarteh delivered the vote of thanks.
