CRR youths trained on IRS application

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, April 22, 2009
A three-day training on safe and correct application of residual insecticide to indoor surfaces on which malaria vectors may rest, concluded last Sunday, April 12, 2009 in Janjanbureh, CRR South.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bala Kandeh, the national coordinator of the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) said the IRS was piloted in Janjanbureh and later expanded to other regions. He noted that the purpose of the spraying is to fight against malaria, noting that malaria is a disease without borders. He added that investing in  malaria prevention and control means investing in poverty eradication.

Bakary Jam Jawo, the chief of Janjanbureh, commended President Jammeh and the Department of State for Health and Social Welfare for their efforts in malaria prevention and control.  He said President Jammeh's malaria eradication initiative and the Global Fund as well as other national malaria control programmes, are geared towards reducing the number of people becoming sick or dying from malaria.

Alhagie Omar Mambureh, the regional youth coordinator  said over four hundred youths are taking part in this programme and urged them to take up the activity with seriousness. He thanked them for their high turnout.
