Information revealed to honourable members of the National Assembly indicates that the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) is currently owed a total amount of D503 million by its different categories of consumers.

This was disclosed by the member for Foni Berefet, Honourable Bintanding Jarju, on Tuesday, during a debate session on President Jammeh's speech during the state opening of the Assembly for the 2009 legislative  year. According to the honourable member, the country's water and electricity providing body is struggling under hard conditions to ensure effective service delivery, taking into consideration the high expenses involved in fuel prices and routine maintenance of heavy generators. "So we can see how NAWEC is struggling," she said, urging consumers to endeavour settling their bills owed to the company.

She argued that if this money owed to the company is recovered, persistent complaints often forwarded on the services of the company would be addressed. NAWEC, Hon. Jarju indicated, needs the money to enable it buy fuel and carry out maintenance services for effective service delivery. While commending the Gambian leader, Profesor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh for investing in the country's energy sector, Honourable Jarju congratulated NAWEC for their steadfastness, stressing that they deserve words of commendations.
