Daddy Jobe SSS wins Inter-School Quranic recitation competition

Wednesday, July 28, 2010
Daddy Jobe Senior School located along the MDI road emerged winners of the 15th edition of the Annual Inter-Senior Schools Quranic Recitation competition organised last Saturday by Nusrat Senior Secondary School.

Nusrat Senior Secondary School came second while Kotu Senior Secondary took third position. The competition was meant to promote better understanding of the Holy Quran and to foster a spirit of healthy competition among students. The event culminated in an Islamic conference on the theme "Islamic finance and conventional banking".Speaking at the occasion, Ibrahima M. Kah, head of Islamic Studies Department at Nusrat SSS, described the competition as something that fosters cordial relationship among the students. He said that in such a competition, there is no loser as both the readers and the listeners are being rewarded by the Almighty Allah.

He finally thanked the schools that participated in the competition. For his part, Bana Sawaneh, a lecturer at the University of The Gambia (UTG) who was also one of the judges, spoke at length on the operation of many banks, which he described as "UnIslamic and Riba", looking at the interest rates attached to the banking system. He cited some hadiths in the Holy Quran where the Almighty Allah forbade anything that is derived from "Riba". According to him, all parties to such transactions share the same sin, noting that any financial transaction that is contrary to the  "Shariah" is unacceptable by Allah.
