Death dealing driver denied bail

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, September 10, 2009
The Bundung Magistrates Court, presided over by Magistrate Lamin George, on Tuesday rejected the bail application of  one Longinus Onyiliagham, after he pleaded guilty to having caused the death of one  Sainabou Jaw in a fatal car incident on August 18.

Lawyer Edu Gomez, counsel for the accused, applied for his client to be granted bail. The police prosecutor, Sergeant 1042 Kujabi, raised no objecion to the defence counsel's application but urged the court to attach stiff conditions to the bail. He then applied for the case to be adjourned noting that the prosecution would be sending the case file to the AG's Chambers for legal advice.

At that juncture, Magistrate Lamin George dismissed the application of the defence counsel, cited the accused person's admission of guilt. Magistrate George then granted the application of the prosecutor and adjourned the case to September 14.
