Demba Sanyang baffled by Zonal fine

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, February 25, 2010
Bakau zonal team defender, Demba Sanyang, has slated the move to fine him for his alleged involvement in the fracas that marred the 2009 Zonal football final between Bakau and Serrekunda East.

Sanyang and his Bakau compatriots Assan Jatta and Lamin Jallow were all fined D2,000 (two thousand dalasis) each after a marathon investigation into the crowd violence found them wanting. Serrekunda East were eventually declared winners, while Bakau were handed a one-year suspension by the GFA who claimed that the meticulous probe in the overall organisation of the final match had found to a large extend that some Bakau players, officials and supporters  were responsible for creating the impasse that brought the final match and subsequently the whole tournament into disrepute.

However, the Steve Biko and former U-20 ace, Sanyang, said he could not still understand why he was fined. "I can't understand why I was fined because I never clashed with anyone during the violence," Sanyang told Observer Sports. "Instead I was struggling to safe my family who had come to watch the game when the violence broke out." "I confronted neither the referees nor any Serrekunda East player during the violence. I and my family are very much disappointed that I was among players fined even though I am innocent."
