Diaratul Kiram to organise Islamic conference

Africa » Gambia
Friday, July 17, 2009
Diaratul Kiram, a well-established Islamic youth organisation, will be organising an Islamic conference on 18 July, 2009, at the Supreme Islamic Council Hall, Kanifing.

The topic of the conference will be "Attitude and Behaviour in Islam. Founded three years ago, the Diara is comprised of young people with the ambition of spreading the teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as well as promoting the exemplary life of Sheikh Mass Kah, a devout Islamic scholar and marabou.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, Abdou Azziz Kah, an executive member of the Diara, said the purpose of organising the conference is to inculcate positive Islamic values on the general Gambian Muslim fraternity. "Society has lost its strong belief in the teachings of the Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad (SAW). So the conference is meant to create the avenue for the general Muslim community to reflect on our duties as Muslims to our creator and society.

"We also want to promote positive social and Islamic values such as respect for elders, parents and authority," he added, noting that good moral values are necessities for nation building. "We also feel that promoting the positive life that Sheikh Mass Kah lived will encourage the younger generation to take their religion seriously because Sheikh Mass Kah devoted his life to serving the Almighty Allah till the day he died," he asserted.

Since it was established, the Diara has been organising symposia, debates as well as Islamic lectures. Plans are underway to register the Diara as a charitable youth organisation according to Abdul Azziz Kah. He urged the general community to attend the conference and help in spreading the message to be delivered by the various speakers. "We are also ready to collaborate with all Islamic associations in the country to spread the Islamic message of peace and tolerance. Our view is that no single mind can stand alone," Kah added.

He concluded by commending the president, Sheikh Professor Alhaji DR Yahya AJJ Jammeh, for his devotion to spreading Islam and for his laudable development initiatives.  Dr. Mbye Kebba Kah, a well-renowned Gambian Islamic scholar and secretary-general of the Supreme Islamic Council, will be among the speakers at the conference which starts at 4 pm.
