Defending Gambian domestic league champions Brikama United’s indifferent start to the season continued at the wekend when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Steve Biko FC at the Box Bar Mini-Stadium in Brikama on Sunday.

Ensa Sambou’s charges suffered their first loss of the season in week four to 2010 champions Gambia Ports Authority at the Independence Stadium and were hoping to bounce back against a Biko side who are also not doing well at the moment. The draw leaves Brikama languishing at seventh place with six points while Biko stay ninth with five points.

But with Brikama stuttering, early pretenders Young African’s strong start continues with yet another impressive win at the weekend. Pa Samba Mbenga’s charges were 2-1 winners over Gambia Armed Forces on Saturday to open up a two-point lead at the top of the 12-team standings with eleven points. Armed Foces dropped to 6th with six points.

Gambia Ports Authority moved above Samger to third on Sunday despite a frustrating goalless stalemate with newcomers Serekunda United. The draw means that GPA have nine points while Samger who were also held to a goalless draw by Real de Banjul 24 hours earlier on Saturday is fourth with eight points. Gamtel is now third folowing their 2-0 win over Hawks also on Saturday. The result means Hawks are now bottom of the table with three points, the same as Real de Banjul. But the Red Devils have an inferior goal difference. The two teams remained as those still without a win so far this campaign.

Walidan also suffered their third defeat of the season when they were edged out 1-0 by Bakau United at the Independence Stadium. Walidan secured their first win of the season in a 1-0 defeat of Steve Biko in midweek but could not build on that remarkable feet at the weekend.
