downpour that caused severe flooding has inundated several households in
Farafenni Ballanghar, thus causing damages and temporal displacement of the
affected families, reported the Daily Observer’s regional correspondent.
The Fire and Rescue Services was at hand to help in mitigating the damages of the compounds of Ajie Satou Mbaye, Mamud Ngum, Ndery Jange ,Sait Touray, as well as a lodge belonging to the Assets Management and Recovery Corporation (AMRC). The governor of the region, Lamin Queen Jammeh and a high-powered delegation visited the scene to assess the damage caused by the latest flooding.
Speaking to this reporter, the officer-in-charge of the AMRC Lodge, Fatou Jange-Kuyateh, blamed the inhabitants for being responsible for the flooding, saying the rubbishes that they dumped, apparently on the waterways, caused the blockage that led to the flooding.
Speaking in a meeting convened shortly after a tour of the affected compounds, the governor described the situation as unfortunate, saying it has affected a lot of households. “It is not easy to provide a ready made solution overnight, but I want to advise the inhabitants to avoid throwing rubbish on the waterways, because what we received from the residents of the area is that they will collect rubbish and dump them on the waterway, which caused this havoc,” he stated, while indicating that at the technical level, they discussed setting up of a technical committee to provide a solution for the area.
Governor Jammeh used the opportunity to call on the people to actively participate in the monthly clean-up exercises to clear the areas of debris, while appealing for immediate assistance to this emergency situation.
