Dr Ceesay cross-examined in infanticide case

Africa » Gambia
Monday, March 08, 2010
Doctor Abdoulie A Ceesay of the RVTH in Banjul, last Friday confirmed to the Special Criminal Court presided over by Justice Moses Richards that he conducted a post mortem on the corpse of a newly born baby delivered by Serreh Gomez, on the 10th of August 2009.

The medical doctor made this revelation in response to a cross examination by Anna Njie, counsel for the accused. Dr Ceesay said the autopsy lasted for 30 minutes and recalled that the accused was charged with the offence of concealing the birth of a newly born baby and disposing it at a dumpsite in Bakau, on the 4th of August 2009. He said the police brought the matter to the RVTH to determine the cause of the death. The baby, he added, was wrapped in 7 different clothes and placed in a rice bag.

He said he could tell the number of days that the baby was exposed before being brought for post mortem on the 10th of August 2009. According to the medical doctor, he used the ordinary tap water to determine the condition of the baby's lungs and after the test he observed that the baby was born alive and fully mature. The test, he went on, revealed that the neck and skull of the baby were intact, but died as a result of asphisia oxygen problem.
