ECCO, DMBH award scholarship to Nusrat ex-student

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 27, 2009
Education through Culture and Communication Organisation (ECCO), in partnership with the Norwegian School of Dance, recently awarded scholarship to one Sarjo

Sankareh, a 19-year-old boy and an ex-student of Nusrat Senior Secondary School, to pursue a degree course in dance movement and choreography in Oslo, Norway. The course is expected to last for three years and it is the first time that such an opportunity is given by ECCO to a Gambian. Speaking to the Daily Observer, Babucarr Sarr, country director of ECCO Gambia, said his organisation has been awarding other scholarships for the past years, but pointed that those ones last for one year, unlike this one.

According to him, four students were selected for the trial and Sarjo Sankareh emerged the luckiest to pursue the degree course.  He also reaffirmed that ECCO will never relent in their efforts in promoting culture in The Gambia, adding  that ECCO for the past years gave one year scholarship awards to six Gambian youths to pursue courses on culture-related issues.

The ECC country director further highlighted that ECCO is working with more than fifteen tertiary institutions across Europe on music and performance, with the aim to create partnership that will give the Gambian youths the opportunity to acquire diverse knowledge on music and performance. He finally hailed the Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh and his government for providing a conducive environment for them to operate.  He also used the opportunity to thank the Gambian leader for promoting culture through the most anticipated Roots Home Coming festival.
