FAME AFRICA issues update - In build-up to 2nd Phase

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, June 18, 2009
Fame Africa was launched on the 12th of December, 2008 at the Paradise Suites Hotel by the vice president, Isatou Njie-Saidy, who was represented by the former minister of Communication,Information, and Information Technology, Fatim Badjie.

The occasion was also graced by other ministers and permanent secretaries who acted as Co-launchers such as the permanent secretary of minister for Culture and Tourism, minister for Youth and Sports, head of Chancery, Nigerian High Commission. Also present were the chief of Defence Staff, NIA chief, The Inspector General of Police, director of National Arts and Culture and other notable personalities.

The Fame Project commenced by engaging the general public especially the students in a story writing competition to select the best story that will be transformed into a movie and subsequently premiered in a film festival. The actors expected to participate in this movie would be Gambians interested in acting along side 5 prominent actors from the Nigerian movie industry. These Nigerian actors would be selected by Gambians through an SMS game to be launched soon.

Hundreds of stories were written and submitted. These stories have been read and evaluated by some selected Gambians from different sectors such as journalism, education and arts. Ten stories have been shortlisted. The criteria for selections were based on their compositions, creativity and originality. The winning prize is one hundred thousand dalasis (D100, 000).

The second phase will begin with an auditioning to select actors and actresses who will feature with three prominent Nigerian actors in the movie that will be shot here in The Gambia. These Nigerian actors will be selected through SMS by Gambians.

FAME AFRICA is aimed at developing and promoting movie and entertainment in The Gambia as well as to impact positively on its tourism & educational sectors through an initiative that will galvanize the nation into a nationwide story/script writing contest.
The second phase is billed to commence in July.
