Farafenni armed attack case suffers set backThursday, August 26, 2010 The ongoing three-count charges of treason filed in by the
state against Abdoulie Sonko, in connection to the November 8th 1996 armed
attack on the Farafenni Military Camp, could not proceed yesterday, August 25th 2010, at the
High Court in Banjul,
due to what both the prosecution and the
defence called absence of exhibits in the case file. Abdoulie Sonko is facing the said charges with respect to the said armed attack on the 8th of November 1996. He was arrested and charged with three counts of treason, contrary to the laws of The Gambia. He first appeared before the then Magistrate Gaye Sowe at the Banjul Magistrates Court and the case was later transferred to the High Court, where a total of six different judges including the presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Amadi presided over it. The accused, Abdoulie Sonko, was expected to open his defence yesterday before Justice Amadi, after his no-case -submission was overruled some time in the year 2008. The defence counsel, Lamin Camara, during the previous sitting made an application for the defence to have access to some of the exhibits in the case file, before they could open their defence. According to the defence counsel, the said exhibits will greatly help the defence to open their defence. This application was given assurance by the state counsel M.B Abubacarr, who promised to contact the court registrar about the request of the defence, but to the surprise of those sitting in the court waiting for the case to be mentioned for proceeding, a prison officer came and informed them about the adjournment of the case. According to the prison officer, the case was adjourned to the 7th of October 2010, on the ground that exhibits of the case were nowhere to be found, and so the judge decided to adjourn it to the said date.
