It was a wonderful weekend for Gambian music lovers as the hit television show on the Gambia’s National Television, Gambia Radio Television Services (GRTS), Fiila, June 1st and 2nd celebrated its third anniversary.

The event, which was celebrated in grand style, took in a form of two spectacular concerts at different venues. The first event was celebrated last Friday June 1st at Jakarlo Senegambia, and then on Saturday June 2nd all roads led to Brikama Jokor for another musical entertainment and live performancesfrom some of Gambia’s finest sensations such as Benjahmin, SingAteh, Jali Madi, Gee, Bro K and T Smalls.

In an interview with What’s On, co-presenter and a member of the Fiila team, Mam Malen Njie aka Blacka Shine expressed delight, stating that the Fiila anniversary was amazing. She explained that after three consistent years on TV, Fiila is still maintaining its popularity and the standard is something worth celebrating.

She said she is extremely happy about the turn out, “It was a special weekend for me and the fact that Gambians took ownership of Fiila and Gambian music made it even more special for me. And as a member of the Fiila team, three years and still going is a great achievement,” She added.

Fiila, which is a word derived from the local Wolof language meaning ‘Its Here’, is set to depict and promote homemade talent. The co-presenter of the TV show also shows off her African pride, wearing an African trade, locally called ‘chaya’. “No amount of words can express how blessed and grateful we are to have such loyal fans and supporters. And I want to assure all Gambian music lovers that Gambian music is here to stay and we will not stop until our music is on the world map and we have big awards like grammys to show for it,” She concluded.

Wagan, team member and one of the organisers of the Fiila anniversary said the event was a success. He thanked all the fans, sponsors and everyone who help to make it happen. He added:“Last but not the least thanks to Mediamatic and Black Lynx for a job well done.”

After his wild performances and being the talk of the town after the anniversary, Geeexpressed his gratitude to his fans. His words: “Gambia got to expect more because I am just warming up. Team Gee have major plans this year, I appreciate everyone that came through to support and show love to Gambian music. You might have your favourite artist but we all stand for one course, and that is to put our country on the map. TeamGee, New Era, La Costra Nostra, Gambia that’s what I stand for.”
