FIOH trains teachers

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, March 02, 2010
Future in Our Hands (FIOH) a non-governmental organisation based in The Gambia recently organised a two-day training for teachers from Tumani Fenda and Sotokoi Lower Basic Schools on early grade reading ability at the Sotokoi Lower Basic School in the Kombo East District.

In an interview with Daily Observer during the training exercise, Kristina Hundahl, the programme coordinator for Future in our Hands (FIOH) explained that the workshop is meant to train teachers on early grade reading ability, and that it is funded by Segra-Serholts, a company in Sweden. She further revealed that the school quality unit started since 2005 with active learning programmes, and that they do conduct workshops once every second week.  She added that they started a workshop on early grade reading in 2009.

Kristina Hundahl said that since the inception of FIOH in the country in 1979, the organisation has built more  than 900 classrooms, 660 toilets and 125 kitchens, something she described as a tremendous achievement.  She commended Katarina and Sten Pathersson, the founders of FIOH, who she said felt the need to establish such an NGO that is inspired to partner with the government in various developmental aspects.  She also called on other partners to collaborate in order to reach other schools across the country as well as individuals and groups in Sweden.
