Flood victims receive assistance

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 27, 2009
Flood victims in the Western Region, yesterday, received assistance from the Disaster Relief Committee of the region.

In an interview with the Daily Observer, the secretary of the Western Region Disaster Relief Committee, Sering Modou Joof, said the committee is working very hard to help the people who are affected by the unabating downpour. He disclosed that they recently distributed over D100,000 worth of materials to 49 compounds, and are still looking for more possibilities to help the victims.

Sering Modou Joof further disclosed that families that were affected by last Tuesday's flooding were all given rice and oil, to support them on their feeding. He said some organisations like Caravan of Mercy, CCF and the Gambia Red Cross Society are all on the ground helping the victims in various ways.

The disaster committee secretary said: "We have been called at the office of the vice president to collect a machine that we can use to spray the flooded areas. This is to prevent any contamination of stagnant water." He said the committee is grateful to all those who are helping the victims.
