"Flying Lion" passes away

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Musa Njie, widely known by his music sobriquet "Flying Lion", passed  on yesterday.

Until his demise, Njie was working with Paradise FM, where he was regarded as one of the strong pillars of the radio. He was laid to rest the same day. Immediately news of his death broke out, thousands of people including friends and relatives stormed his compound to pay their last respects. The sad news has taken the entire country by storm, as the fallen hero was a household name in the country's music scene.

Music Career
Flying Lion, as he was fondly called while with his former crew, Penchabi Crew, got a three-album contract at Yellow Gate Studios. The first had already been recorded and released. After its release, they (the Penchabi Crew) went on a countrywide tour that same year. They were also featured on the 'Kairo Songs of The Gambia' a compilation which gives an overview of the music in the country.

The group which featured ex-radio comedian, Amie Cherry, three local rappers and a Senegalese singer first released their promo singles, `Bai Ma-Lamin Darra' and `Joyleh-Lenn' a Tribute to the late Ousu 'Lion' Njie. However, their track featured a fusion of R&B, rap-ragga and mbalax, blended with some African mix.

If you've kept an eye on the country's music scene  4-5 years ago, then Njie's  rapid rise to stardom shouldn't come as a surprise as he and his former crew were household names in the country. They have virtually played at all corners of this country. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
