Forward Ali Sowe’s brace secure Gamtel second win

Africa » Gambia
Monday, February 06, 2012

A second half brace from Ali Sowe was all that was needed to ensure victory for Gamtel as they defeated Hawks in week five of the GFA first division championship. It was the FA Cup champions second win of the campaign. The game started brightly for both teams but the first half saw the telecommunication boys having the best of chances.

In the 21st minute Ali Sowe was provided with a fine cross from right back Alhagie Amadou Ngum but his header went over the bar. Then Modou Sarr found himself in a good position inside the Hawks box, but his shot lacked the accuracy to find the back of Francis Mendy’s net.

Towards the end of the first period Ali Sowe again dribbled past two Hawks defenders but his shot at goal was easily saved by the keeper as it lacked power while at the other end Hawks left back Pierre Gomez sent a dangerous cross to the Gamtel box that found the head of Alpha Sidibeh but his header narrowly missed the Gamtel post.

The second period was another entertaining spectacle from both teams but early on Hawks had the best of chances but once again failed to capitalise on them. In the 54th minute the ball fell perfectly for Yusupha Bobb but his well executed shot went high before he shot straight into the keeper’s arms.

Then in the 69th minute, Gamtel broke the deadlock following a lack of communication in the Hawks backline. Hawks giant defender Alieu Ceesay headed the ball towards his goalkeeper but it didn’t reach Francis Mendy as Ali Sowe sneaked in to steal the ball and give his side the lead. Sowe then made sure of the win in the 87th minute as he blasted a shot inside the box that left the Hawks custodian helpless.
