Gambia College case resumes

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
The false information case involving Lamin BT Sanyang and Abdoulie Baldeh, both former lecturers at The Gambia College's School of Education, yesterday resumed before Magistrate Lamin George of the Banjul Magistrates Court.

During yesterday's session, Inspector Kujabi, a police officer attached to the Major Crime Unit at Police Headquarters, gave his testimony. The officer testified in 2008, he received a letter - authored by the two - from the Office of the President through his boss with the recommendation that the principal of the Gambia College, Dr Alieu Badara Senghore, and Isatou Ndow, head of the School of Education, be called for questioning. According to the police inspector, both Dr Senghore and Isatou Ndow were questioned and cautionary statements obtained from them. He added that statements were received from others including some students of the college and the two accused persons.

He told the court that a case file was prepared and sent to the AG Chambers, who recommended that a charge be preferred against the two, who were accordingly charged and brought to the court. Responding to cross-examination from the defense counsel, Lamin Camara, the police inspector maintained that he obtained statements from the two accused.

However, the alleged petition letter was rejected as evidence on the ground that the one which was brought to be tendered was a photocopy and the proper foundation had not been laid for it to be admitted as evidence. Case adjourned to 11th May 2009 for continuation.
