Gambia cricketers fail in Malawi

Friday, October 09, 2009
The Gambia national cricket team will return from the Pepsi Africa League Division Three Cricket Championship hosted in Malawi with no win in three successive matches.

The Gambian side lost to eventual champions and hosts Malawi by a record 141 runs in a one sided tussle on Monday, capping a disappointing end to their campaign. Malawi's win did not come as a surprise but it was the margin that was beyond expectations. Butting first, the hosts for the first time in the tournament wound up the set 50 overs in the process recording 277 runs. Attention on the torrid day focused on the 19-year-old Malawian rising star Frank Alick who smashed two wickets run out and a leg before wicket. The Gambians saw the game drifting away from them in their 34th run, when they remained with two bowlers after nine had been dismissed.

The visitors could not hang on as one of their bowlers got a dismissal throwing their game in disarray. Technically the match was over. "This is the biggest victory we have registered so far in this tournament. We are on the right track," Malawi Cricket Union chairman Riz Omar told local press. Disappointed Gambia coach, Malamin Fofana, blamed fatigue for his team's woeful display. "We travelled a long distance by road from home to Dakar, where we boarded a plane. "Then here we landed in Lilongwe and again travelled by road to Blantyre.

In addition to that we are playing daily. It's exhaustive anyway," Fofana said. Malawi beat Sierra Leone on Tuesday to win the championship. As champions, Malawi have qualified for the World League Division Two which has better ranked teams.
