Gambia name 23-man squad for 2012 opener

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

The Gambia have named a 23-man provisional squad as preparations intensify for the Scorpions' opening match in the 2012 African Nations Cup qualifiers against Namibia on Saturday.

The list includes 20 players who ply their trades in Europe and America and three home-based players.

Gambia's Belgian coach Paul Put has told Gambia Sports Online that the team started a four-day camp on Tuesday evening when almost all of the foreign-based players have arrive for September 4 crucial encounter. There are no major casualties in the team and almost the entire big guns are in the squad except for those who are currently clubless in the forms of defenders Abdoulie Paco Corr and Lamin Babaye Conateh while there is a return for forward Aziz Corr Nyang.

MSK Zilina forward Momodou Ceesay is also back in the team after guiding the Slovakian champions into the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in the club's history. The Scorpions coach also called up two defenders that are expected to make their Gambia debuts. Djurgarden’s Kebba Ceesay and Mamadou Futty Danso of the Portland Timbers in the United States have been called-up for the first time as the Belgian continues his search for more young talents.

Speaking to Gambia Sports Online after revealing his team, the Belgian tactician said he will be going for an all attacking fixture against the Brave Warriors on Saturday hinting that Norway duo Ebrima Sohna and Tijan Jaiteh will not play together in midfield in Banjul but warned that there are no fixed places in his squad. "When you are playing at home, you have to attack so you cannot play a double six which is the case with Tijan and Sohna. I will attack to win but there are no fixed places in my team so everyone will fight for his place in the team." The recent form of Momodou Ceesay has put the Belgian under immense pressure to form the 'dream strike partnership' of Ceesay and Ous Jallow especially with the fact that Njogu Demba is now more a regular with Danish club OB Odense.
