Thursday, March 07, 2013
The Gambia government has sent a message of condolence to the Republic of Venezuela on the demise of President Hugo Rafael Chavez, a long time friend and ally of The Gambia, which sad event occurred on Tuesday, 5th March 2013. The government, in its condolence message, expressed deepest sympathy and condolence to the Government and people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela during this time of sorrow and grief. The government also prayed that Almighty Allah give the people of the Bolivarian Republic the same strength and courage that earned the late President the esteem of his countrymen. This was contained in a press release sent to the Daily Observer yesterday.
The message reads:
The Office of the President has learnt with deep sorrow and extreme sadness the death of President Hugo Rafael Chavez, long time friend and ally of The Gambia, which sad event occurred on Tuesday, 5th March 2013. We the Government and people of The Gambia express our deepest sympathy and condolence to the Government and people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela during this time of sorrow and grief. Our thoughts are with them and the Hugo Chavez family, and we pray that Almighty Allah give the people of the Bolivarian Republic the same strength and courage that earned the late President the esteem of his countrymen.
In view of this unfortunate and sad event, we kindly request the general public (Muslims and Christians) to use Friday 8th March and Sunday 10th March, 2013 as prayer days at Mosques and Churches for the late President of Venezuela.
The Gambia has not only lost a dear friend but a true fighter for the poor and the helpless. President Chavez lived in defence of the poor, stretching out his helping hands to the needy irrespective of colour, race, region or religion. He will therefore be remembered for his immense contributions to humanity.
President Hugo Chavez was an embodiment of the true teachings of Islam – sharing with a craving for the needy and the weak. Instead of using wealth to bully people and countries, President Chavez used the wealth of his country to transform lives of the ordinary people at home and abroad, and this is a perfect example of what a real leader should be. These are values we stand for as a government, and that was our affinity to President Hugo Chavez Frias.
His benevolence has touched many lives around the world, from Education and Health to Infrastructure. He has helped the sick, the poor and the desperate not only in Venezuela or Latin America but around the globe.
His demise is therefore a great loss to decent human beings and the underprivileged everywhere in the world. We will continue to pray that Allah Subhanahu Wa Tala grant him eternal bliss and pray for his family and country to have the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
