Gambia, Senegal display mystical wonders in Kanilai

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, June 08, 2010
Cultural troupes from within and outside the country continue to thrill the thousands of spectators at the ongoing 5th Kanilai International Cultural Festival with amazing mystical demonstrations.

The latest to take the stage in Kanilai were troupes from The Gambia and Cassamance in Senegal who on Sunday night entertained with various cultural performances, including mystical power displays. Like the Sierra Leoneans and Malians did previously at the ongoing festival, the Gambian and Senegalese troupes also amazed the crowd with their various mystical performances amidst typical cultural dances and music. Their displays on Sunday night were perhaps meant to show to the spectators that they also are endowed with mystical capabilities.

First to take the stage were members of the Awonsanneh Jola Cultural Troupe in Foni, Western Region, who, among other displays, used sharp knives to slash their bodies without being hurt, as the knives failed to penetrate their skins. Another notable mystical display from the Jola warriors was when a man attempted to slaughter his colleague, a woman with a sharp knife, but could not penetrate the skin of the powerful Jola woman who boasted about her mystical powers.

The mystical displays of the Awonsanneh Group were repeated by the Kamanjo Cultural Group, also from the Foni. They amazed the spectators by using a sharp saw to attempt slicing their bodies, and yet were not hurt.

Samba Juma Bah, a young Fula boy from the Upper River Region (URR) of The Gambia, as well as the Fire Lady of Brikama also displayed their mystical talents. Yankuba Jarjue and group members from Cassamance also performed extremely well, and reproduced mystical acts displayed by previous Gambian groups at the festival. Jarjue buried a cock alive and promised to unveil it in the next performance.

He also informed the gathering that their action was a tip of the iceberg, as he promised to produce a wolf at the festival ground on Wednesday. He stressed that the Jolas' late performance doesn't mean they cannot perform any mystical power demonstration, but due to the fact that they respect their guests, thus, allowing them to perform before them.
