The Gambia National Women Under 17 team  on Sunday made sure of their passage into the next round of African qualifiers for a place in the World U17 Championship in the Eastern European country of Azerbaijan, despite a 3-1 defeat to Sierra Leone in the second leg of their preliminary round qualifier in Makeni.

The girl Scorpions advanced 4-3 on aggregate following a 3-0 win in Banjul in the first leg a fortnight ago. Buba Jallow’s team will now face Tunisia in a two-legged affair next month for a place in the next round of the qualifiers. The Tunisian girls secured their passage into the first round after their preliminary round opponents Guinea Conakry withdrew from the running.

The Gambia Football Association (GFA)?is now awaiting confirmation from the Confederation of African football (CAF) as to the opponents and the dates the two games will be played. The Gambian team left Banjul for Sierra Leone on Friday. The Gambian delegation headed by Lamin Sambou travelled to Sierra Leone’s fourth largest city, Makeni, some ninety five kilometers from the capital Freetown for the game at the country’s 2nd FIFA Gold Project.

The Gambia Football Association (GFA)?extends infinite thanks and gratitude to the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) for the provision of twenty air tickets and Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCCA) for also providing the GFA with five other air tickets to facilitate the travelling arrangements of the National Women U-17 side for their return leg to Sierra Leone, Media officer of the FA Bakary B Baldeh told Observer Sports.
