Gambian musicians to participate in UK musica competition

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, September 15, 2009
Three Gambian musicians: Biran Saine, Mam Biran Saine and Liety Fye, who specialised in training of wollof music at ECCO, recently left for the UK, where they are expected to take part in an international music performance.

These musicians were invited by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to take part in a UK music performance that will commence from the 1st October to 3rd November 2009. Confirming this to the Daily Observer, Babucarr Sarr, the country director of Education through Culture and Communication Organisation (ECCO) Gambia, said that the UK international music performance will involve developing and rehearsing new materials with Outhouse Ruhabi, showcasing the work through a small tour, delivering workshops and participation in a Guildhall connect international project.

The ECCO Gambia boss further revealed that the aim of the programme is to share skills, cultural styles and approaches to creative group music making. He also added that the ECCO musicians involved would work together with Outhouse, the Jetsam Ensemble (graduates from the Mmus in leadership programme), young musicians from the connected project and Palestinian music students from Israel. "There will also be a workshop on leading skills and they will learn about new cultures including  UK and Palestinian music,"  he concluded.
